The Meaning of Dragon Boat Festival

你們知不知道吃粽子是什麼意思？對，吃粽子，它來自那個故事嘛，屈原投汨羅江。為什麼粽子要包成這個樣子？四角，裡面還有餡，包餡在裡面。它告訴我們「仁、義、禮、智」就是這四個角，裡面那個餡就是「信」，所以當我們吃粽子的時候，我們不能忘記，我們要把「仁、義、道、德、禮、智、信」吃進來，不要遺忘掉！所以，當年屈原是我們委屈的本原，委屈的本原嘛，所以要回溯回來。 

汨羅江投河自盡，眾生用這些粽子，它都有表法的意義，那些古聖先賢無盡智慧，其實不是叫我們在那裡吃，吃到胃腸不舒服這樣而已吶，是叫我們在我們人世間任何一件事情都要學到真正的高度智慧。那投下去讓那些魚吃，魚，一群一群魚表達一個意涵──人的欲望流衍，就是說男精女血會合，那種無盡的欲望會一直延伸，讓我們的本原失去，本原那個清淨本體；（欲望）一直拓展、一直拓展，就拓展到現在的五濁惡世、五欲六塵這些世界！

期望說那些表法，讓這些拓延出去的五欲六塵施回來什麼？仁義禮智信。因為失去了，才會有這些五濁惡世的名聞利養，施回來是不是就慢慢回溯我們的本原？那個本原就不會委屈了。所以屈原他有這個表法吶，而不是說只有那個古人叫做屈原，死掉了，〔沉〕下去，捨不得魚吃他的肉，我們現在就包很多東西給他。所以是要維護那個本原，我剛剛講：道不可須臾離也，可離者，非是道，端午節是這個意涵。

🗣Do you know why we eat rice dumpling during the Dragon Boat Festival? 🤔
Due to the story of Chu Yuan, who threw himself into the Mi Lo River, we wrap up the rice dumplings with four corners and put stuffing inside. The four corners represent the Benevolence, the Righteousness, the Courteousness, the Wisdom and the stuffing is regarded as Trust. Therefore, while eating rice dumplings, we should keep benevolence, righteousness, being truthful, morality, courteousness, wisdom, and trust in our minds. Chu Yuan is the person with virtuousness, so on this day, while eating rice dumplings, we should memorize those kindnesses as well.

The ancestors and saints were wisdom. They spread the story of Chu Yuan, conveyed ideas, and informed the meanings to us. Dragon Boat Festival is not the day just for eating rice dumplings. Having too many of it may also cause us to have an upset stomach. However, everything in our lives means something, everything possesses wisdom that we can learn from. After Chu Yuan drowned himself in the Mi Lo River, people threw rice dumplings into the river for the fishes to eat to prevent Chu Yuan’s body to be eaten. The school of fish represent to our desires; when the sperm of a man meets woman’s ovum, the endless desire will expand. It will result in losing our virtues, purity and the peaceful selves. Nowadays, this desired and greedy world is the evidence of the cause.

We hope that after knowing those representatives, people will stop expanding desires and bring the virtues back. Let the people who lost the idea of virtues and the world that has been filled with fame chasing and evils start to practice virtues, then the originally wonderful selves will return. We will not feel wronged or be unjust treated anymore. That is what Chu Yuan wanted to tell us. Chu Yuan’s death and the rice dumplings are not just a story and a kind of dish. The true meaning of Dragon Boat Festival is to remind us that we need to remember our kindnesses and virtues. That’s why I said, the Truth must be compatible with life. If not, it is not the Truth.
